Drivers Updaters: Do I Need One?
#11
I used IOBit - Advanced System Care and Driver Update. Free and work. Mostly.

Free driver managers work but also had a couple of failures, resulting in my system being unusable and having to roll back.
Each has an on-line driver database, so afaik there's no offline solution to cover all possible driver versions for every hardware in Universe.

Maybe you need to check drivers one by one and find which updates, and combinations of updates, work for your PC and operating system.

Yep, it sucks, but there's no magic bullet, one-size-fits-all solution here.
So don't apologise for learning and looking into the future, it's natural. Guess we all suffer from software evolution and hardware obsolescence.

Only if something requires it otherwise just go with what you have and make the best of it.

Well, I tried Windows 10 on my Dell Dimension 3100 and nothing, nothing at all.

Not going back to that problem again.

Back to Windows 7 and staying there for a longer time.

If it works don't fix it, I would consider changing from Win7 to 8 or 10 a downgrade. If your computer is old it will only run worse.
IMHO, Win7 was the last half decent OS MS has produced, and it may be the last one I will use if the dumbing-down trend continues.
The solution for 'old hardware' is 'new hardware', not drivers.
But, for example I had a game that wouldn't run and it suggested updating my video drivers,
I would go to the nVidia site and see if a newer driver was available for my card.
I would NEVER NEVER use one of those Driver-Updater scams that you see when you 'google' for drivers, stick with the OEM,
if they don't have a update then there isn't one.

Good point, Faithwyn.

Altough I mostly agree with Faithwin, there are exceptions.

I found good drivers outside the official sites a couple times, because not all versions of a certain driver are available in my language / localized site.
For some stuff, there're no official sources anymore, or they don't work on Win7/Win10, so I got them from Google: Forums, Softpedia, even 4Share.

Risky, but I'm a computer junkie.

I support your case, dueda, as the display drivers were only meant for XP. Apparently, they work for Windows 7 too.

I guess I pushed my luck once too far.

No good lasts forever, no harm never ends. Time to buy new stuff is nigh, for both of us.

Learning from mistakes is ever-present.

I will not buy another Windows OS.

If necessary, I will switch to Linux Mint should it become absolutely necessary.

As said RX.

I like to stick to the basic rule: if it isn't broke don't fix it; however I would say it's good to try new things and no real harm came from trying to upgrade to Win10.
