It doesn't mean anything. It appears when you connect using https. I guess they wanted to add a little secure spice to the text input.

It prevents me from entering text within the search box and clicking on the [Pirate Search] button. I tried to access via http://thepiratebay.org but Chrome switches it to https which locks out the search. Annoying but at least I have a workaround:

I use the [TAB] key to reach the search box, type my text and then [TAB] once more to reach the [Pirate Search] button which I "click" by pressing the [SPACEBAR].

Works fine with Internet Explorer i.e. the search field can be typed in.

It doesn't prevent anything. It is an icon. Whatever issues you are having are in your browser, as you have already stated.

I started Chrome's DevTools (F12) and figured out the problem.

After the </footer> tag there are 3 <apb-hidden> tags and 10 <div> that are rendered on top of the search field, the checkboxes (All, Audio ... Other) and buttons (Pirate Search and I'm Feeling Lucky):
Code:
<div style="height: 25px; width: 390px; z-index: 2147483647; top: 350.188px; left: 509px; position: fixed; display: block;"></div>

These are not present when I load the page in Internet Explorer.  I finally figured out that these are injected by the Chrome extension "Adblock Plus".  Disabling that extension made the search field accessible.  Hopefully this will be helpful to others.
