Discussion: Solar Opposites

So earlier this month on May 8th, the genius Justin Roiland the creator behind "Rick and Morty", released the longly anticipated series "Solar Opposites". I pirated and binge watched the whole thing within a single day. It was worth it, and single-handedly proves that Justin isn't a one hit wonder but rather a master at creating cinematic masterpieces. He can stay above the surface and create humorous situations or dig deeper down and bring out real-life emotional situations and add a twist to them that you never saw coming. And manages to do this every single time.

The description of the new show is as follows, "A family of aliens from a better world must take refuge in middle America; they disagree on whether Earth is awful or awesome.". And it's as outlandish at it sounds. Even weirder than Rick and Morty in the social/commonality side of things, in my opinion. However I don't love the character dynamics between the aliens as much as Rick and Morty. He creates an amazing contrast of a real family while still having the weird mixture between Rick, Morty, Summer, Beth, and Jerry's characters. It's not as cleanly perceived in the new series, but maybe with seasonal development it'll improve. Either way, they're still hilarious and every episode is an equally wonderfully strange creation to say the least.

Now having completed the first season, I can say by far that my absolutely most favorite aspect of the new show is "The Wall", a term you will become very familiar with if you decide to or already have watched the series. This part of the show is so inventive and so imaginative. I want to say that it's amusing but it's more exhilarating because while there are a couple comedic pieces in that part of the show it's more on the serious while also being kind of dark humility which Justin is known for doing sometimes. Basically, these people are taken and their whole lives uprooted and the normality of humanity as they know it gone and now live in more of a post-apocalyptic type humanity. And the aliens take their lives with a grain of salt, not even giving them attention just kind of unknowingly creating a whole miniature world where these people have a whole different kind of lifestyle now and even creating their own culture.

The weirdest part, having now finished the first season I can safely say is the "pupa"/"pod" character. It's kind of the "Perry the Platypus" of Solar Opposites. What he does, where he comes from, and what he is even isn't really heavily explained. This is probably something they'll do in future seasons no doubt. He has to grow into something, right? But as of now, he just kind of does his own thing and you see him from time to time. But definitely, random and weird at this point in time.

But those are my thoughts on the series as of now, please feel free to comment any thoughts, opinions, references, observations, or predictions! This "discussion" thing is something I feel like I may do more often with newer films and television programs. I know the TV/Movies subs aren't as popularly used so hopefully this will create some stimulating conversation on a common basis.

If you'd like to watch this show, it's being streamed on kisscartoon and obviously pirates are available on TPB.

I could swear that Matt Groening of the Simpsons and Futurama had a part of this.

The artwork looks identical.

Thanks for sharing anyways!

Haha, definitely in that realm of weirdness if not even more. Justin Roiland is a very interesting creator to say the least.
