Somayeh’s life is a mess. A chador-wearing young woman who sees the Islamic Republic of Iran’s supreme leader as something like a saint, Somayeh has divorced her husband and is living as a single mother. The details of her marriage breakdown – of the philandering, porn-watching, crack-smoking ex – are a closely guarded secret in what is one of Tehran’s oldest and most conservative neighbourhoods. Yet she is sharing them, and her ongoing battle with the urge to masturbate, with a British-Iranian journalist who is planning to write it all up in a book.
