China’s first wetland protection law goes into effect
#1
China’s first wetland protection law came into effect on June 1, 2022. The measure restricts construction projects and bans harmful activities in key national wetlands, including overgrazing, overharvesting, discharging of waste water and land reclamation. China currently has 64 wetland areas considered to be of international importance, as well as over 1,600 wetland parks. The areas are home to over 2,300 species of plants and nearly 330 species of birds, according to China’s National Forestry and Grassland Administration. The country aims to increase its wetland protection rate to 55 per cent by 2025, restoring 66,000 hectares of wetlands.
