Bangladesh: Government to formulate new law to increase surveillance on social media
#1
The government of Bangladesh has taken initiative to formulate a new law to increase surveillance on social media. The concerned authorities have already started work to prepare a draft bill in this regard.

Officials say the law will guarantee the security of the data generated inside the country.

However, experts and social media users fear that it will create opportunity to interfere in user data and control freedom of expression.

Quote:While talking about the issue, Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar said, "We do not have any law to take action against social media companies. We have no data protection laws and nothing to protect people's privacy. So, we have taken an initiative to formulate a law and our goal is to force social media companies to abide by the laws of Bangladesh through this initiative. ”

Mentioning that ICT department is making the draft law, State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Junaid Ahmed Palak said the foreign internet companies will have to set up data centers nationally and store user data within the country under the law.

Quote:"It will help us take action against the people who are spreading rumours and abusing the internet", he noted.
