Bad Power Supply

If you take the PSU out you can look up what kind it is and can easily find a replacement with the same cable types and wattage.

Some places to check: newegg, tigerdirect and ebay.

It's making a silent buzz.

I'm petrified that I can't replace a power supply that has a 2x2 and a 2x10 connector.

Petrified of that and petrified of losing a valuable computer, if it is old.

I think what you're talking about is a 20-pin Main Connector and a 4-pin CPU Connector.

This is probably what you need: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a...6817206008

One thing I would ask is if you have SATA drives or old IDE ones. To tell, do you have really wide/thick grey cables inside the case?
The one I linked has the ability to use both.

The computer in question has both SATA and IDE cables.

Ribbon IDE cables and SATA running together will not be of issue. If your machine is old to enough run IDE, you've likely got fans in front of the drives. You should addition to those, have a main fan extract on the back, fan on PSU, and some cases, fan over heatsink. Problem does not sound like PSU. Sounds like a fan issue.

Bench test PSU to find peace of mind in finality.

Also, HDDs, SATA or IDE have parts moving. Maybe failing HDD. Bench test also.

How many IDE and SATA cables do you have?
The numbers will depend on what power supply you'll need to get. Some have more cables than others.
Also do you have a floppy drive? If I remember correctly they had their own kind of power cable.

@RX you've got many of us trying to solve a problem with little info. What you give is generic and can/could be many things.

Post specs of everything, your no fool. We can help but disrespect to how we may help is what it seems like.

I'm new user but it looks like Troll but Troll in a bad way. If not, my apology to break bread on our table.

Exact mainboard model would be enough to recommend you a compatible PSU.

My motherboard is an antiquated Intel D865Perl.

My power supply is a 12V ATX.

I need two SATA cables and two IDE cables, but that's not the problem as in this day and age, there are converter cables for those.

The one I linked before has enough cables for what you need. It's 400W, 20-pin main, 4-pin cpu, 4 Molex for IDE/Peripheral, 2 SATA, 2 Floppy.
That should suite your needs.

Mucho gracias, AR, mucho gracias.

I've replaced that computer's power supply before, and it wasn't exactly rocket science, but that was years ago.

I would imagine that the technological landscape would change numerously since then.

EDIT: To add, the PSU has enough Molex connectors for IDE as the PSU was manufactured at the time when IDE was king. I can switch and replace at my heart's content, I guess.
