Ask you "WHY?" won't you?

I'm on it most of the day under another username. I think it might scratch that itch you've got. Just drop in any time.

Pro tip: If you have Amazon Prime, you can subscribe to the channel for free and get rid of the annoying Twitch commercials.

Yes the twitch channel is decent. But not really what i was thinking. Its more random than what i was suggesting. We could decide which movie and choose from a wider range than what they generally show on the twitch stream. The chat is also very random. And i think the main point of the fun would be choosing the movie as a group and then watching it as a group with maybe a little more in depth discussion than the chat typically is. Sort of like a movie night thing. Maybe uts not for everybody. Thanks for the suggestion and the pro tip though. Happy new year.

Sorry for the question marks in my previous post i was using my phones emojis

Why? I guess because the first episode of MST3K I watched (one of the Hercules) made me laugh so hard I couldn't breathe. I've been all in ever since. I never really thought about it deeper than that.

As time went along, one added appeal as a casual B-movie fan was that I finally got to see so many movies that I had only glimpsed from VHS trailer compilations or fanzine tape lists.

Most were so spectacularly putrid, I knew I never would have made it through without Joel/Mike & The Bots. Just like I know I'd never make it through the modern blockbusters without MK&B.

My reasons are the same as every comment here:
- jokes/comedy
- commentary
- meta aspect (5th wall ?)
- watching a movie I've never heard of nor would ever want to watch on my own
- having "friends" when I'm feeling lonely
- catching references and callbacks
also:
- being part of a very niche culture  Tongue
- background noise
- sleeping aid, "Hamlet" being the most famous one on that category

But I will add something more weirdly personal: When I first started watching MST3K, it gave me the same inexplicable feeling I got when I first started listening to Frank Zappa. I was so happy to find out they were "related",e.g. Frank Conniff, Trace, Kevin and Joel being fans of his, him being fan of the show and even writing something for them and being the only homage they've ever done for on the show. I wish I could be a writer to explain that feeling but I think is something about kitschy 50s/early 60s culture that's one of the ingredients.
I still can't remember what episode I watched first, it was either Squirm or Pod People. I count Pod People as the one that got me hooked, believe it or not but it was the "Huzzah!" riffs that got me.

I think also that it's a legitimate art (and comedy) form that very few people are capable of pulling off.

I like the concept of riffing, but I'm also endlessly fascinated by the movies generally featured on MST3K or RT VODs. The actors, the career of the director, the film's production history, weird choices made due to budget or genuine madness. Stuff like that.

[Cribbed from Meowt here]

- Comedy - There's little I find truly LOL funny and these riffers just do it for me. (Plus MJ&B and Quiptracks)

- "B" movies - I used to love "B" movies as a kid and still love them, but only when watching with friends or when riffed. I cant watch them "straight" anymore. And related to  HmGabe85's comment, there is a deep interest in how and why these flicks got made. For example: How did Joe Don Baker have a career as a leading man!?

- "Friends" - Totally. It is like watching with old friends.  And I have been watching movies with these guys for 30 years now, in a fashion. Watching is even better with actual like-minded friends, but that isn't always possible.

- Background noise - This.  Great for when I'm painting or drawing. Although laughing out loud when you're in the middle of a brush stroke is not convenient. Smile

- Sleepy-time - I often nod off with an old favorite playing.

- Niche culture - It isn't everyone's cuppa' and frankly, I'm good with that. To dumb down the jokes for mass consumption just wouldn't be as fun.

It's a truly unique post-modern art form. That is - it's art that draws from the artistic environment it was cultivated in, and employs that very culture to create something magnificent and beautiful, that's also intelligent, engaging, relevant, thought-provoking, and HIGHLY enjoyable (the most important aspect); without being all highfalutin and up it's own @$$.

Because some movies just deserve to be made fun of.
