Are there any DVD players that can play .mp4, .avi, .mkv, etc. formats.....

Hi buddies,

Hope you all are having a wonderful time.

Is anyone here aware of any such DVD players that can play .mp4, .avi, .mkv, etc. formats via USB Flash Drive or external hard disk/drive?

I'm told that a Blu-ray player can usually play the above formats, but I don't know whether or not a Blu-ray player will work on my TV (LG Ultra Slim Turbo sound, and most probably not HD ready). Besides, can Blu-Ray players play the subtitles too if the .sub or .srt file is there along with the movie file?

Do you know of any appropriate (not too pricey, if possible) players taking into consideration what all I mentioned above? Any suggestions that can help play the aforementioned files with the specifications provided above are welcome. TIA.

Hello.

None that I know of.

(Small) Media Players offer a nice alternative, if you just want to play files via USB / Ext HDD. They are not too expensive.

What I have is named "CUBETEK HD MEDIA PLAYER 1080P"
It is a small device that plays just about every format.
Also has a USB port, to which I can connect a pen-drive or even a Ext HDD. Cheap and good.

Not sure about global availability. But there must be similar products.
Search the Net for (small) "hd media player" and check the tech specs and things like
how the device handles subtitles etc.

ASUS OPLAY_MINI. I think someone mentioned this device in the forums recently.
Am sure there must be more such.

I think Amazon Fire TV is a recent product that fits your needs, though it has lots more features in it.
Here is one review, which also mentions some alternatives.

Thanks a ton for your response. One question, though. Does such HD media player work with the TV that are not HD ready?

Yes. It works well. It has a AV port and the package comes with a composite cable (3.5 mm to RCA).
The RCA end plugs into your non HD TV and the 3.5 mm jack into the media player.

The device of course needs an external power source. A power adaptor that is provided, serves the purpose.

But the picture quality wouldn't be up to par with HD TVs, right?

Much appreciate your prompt response. Can't thank you enough for your help.

Welcome :-)
Would like to point out two CONS of the device (imo)

1) It heats up a bit more than I would like.
So am unable to use it continuously for long.

2) If the subtitles are in a separate folder, am unable to select it.
Looks like the subs have to be in the same folder as the movie.
This is a big bother when playing off the external HDD.

Otherwise it is good.

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I've to postpone the purchase as other priorities (i.e. health problem & medical expenses) have shown up. Hence, the delay in replying.
