US officials have leaked news of Britain's commitment to buy replacement for Trident's nuclear warheads before MPs were informed.
Several officials within the US defense department have openly discussed the agreement to replace the UK's nuclear warheads - even though the Ministry of Defence is yet to tell either the British public or Parliament about any such decision.
Admiral Charles Richard, head of the US strategic command, told the Senate defense committee last week that the US government's next-generation W93 nuclear warhead would "support a replacement warhead program in the United Kingdom, whose nuclear deterrent plays an absolutely vital role in NATO's overall defense posture."
The UK government is now expected to announce the warhead agreement to Parliament, which returns from recess on Monday, after The Observer broke news of the US disclosures.
The bill for the replacement nuclear warheads is likely to run up to billions of pounds.

"We have a strong defense relationship with the US and will continue to remain compatible with the US Trident missile.
"An announcement about the UK's replacement warhead programme will be made in due course."
