A smooth jazz thread in the music section
#1
Hi.

I would like to start a smooth jazz thread in the music section and I seek approval for this endeavor.

I am aware that there is already a jazz thread, but that thread covers traditional jazz. Smooth jazz as a movement is distinct from traditional jazz.

I think smooth “jazz” is sort of a misnomer as it gives the impression that it fits within the scope of classic jazz. It doesn’t. I would suggest that the term “jazz” in smooth jazz be replaced by another word more fitting to the music.

Smooth jazz is music that evolved from a blend of jazz fusion and easy listening pop music, featuring a polished pop feel with little to no jazz improvisation. The genre arose in the mid-1970s in the United States, but it was not named "smooth jazz" until the 1980s.

Traditional jazz players and jazz purists rejected the style. As an example of this, the “Sound Investment” column of Jazz Journal, November 1999, stated that it “would cover an extremely wide spectrum of jazz styles” while avoiding smooth jazz.

There are certainly enough songs to support a separate smooth jazz thread. There are thousands and thousands of songs; this is easily understood when you consider that the style has been ongoing now for well over thirty years.

Smooth jazz is relaxing and uplifting. The music is a breath of fresh air in this troubled world.

I would enjoy working on such a thread and I think the listeners would really appreciate it also.

No, there is already an existing jazz music thread and there's no point in having different jazz threads for different styles of jazz, just as there's no point in having say, 10 different metal threads for different styles of metal, or 10 different hip hop threads for different styles of hip hop.

Imagine how clogged up the music forum would be if we started getting all divisive and petty about sub genres and had separate threads for death metal, doom metal, black metal, industrial metal, grindcore, deathcore, power metal, speed metal, progressive metal, thrash metal, old skool metal, punk metal, etc etc (I don't know the terms for different styles of jazz which is why I've used metal as an example). These different sub genres of metal are very distinct from each other but they all have one thing in common - they're still metal - just as smooth jazz is still jazz music.

There aren't many people here who like jazz in the first place, and dividing it up into several smaller sub categories is going to put people off from giving it a listen. I don't like progressive metal at all and wouldn't bother reading a thread solely devoted to that sub genre, but if someone posted a prog metal choon in the metal thread, I'd be more inclined to give it a listen.

All jazz belongs in the existing jazz thread, regardless of what sub category a song belongs to. Feel free to educate people about smooth jazz there.

Miles David - Kind of Blue

Best album of all time, all genres.

My 2 cents.

Deserves an entire thread for that one album!

I won't post smooth jazz in the jazz thread.

I refuse.

I think you overlooked what I was trying to point out - that jazz purists reject smooth jazz. Therefore, in my opinion it seems warranted to separate the two.

I wasn't suggesting twelve different jazz threads, as illustrated in your hyperbolic metal example, only one other.

It is a real shame. The listener's are going to miss out on some great music.

So be it.

If you collect smooth jazz albums (hopefully in lossless) you should really upload them to TPB as torrents if you want people to hear them AND collect them.

You could then start your own releaser thread in the Promote Your Shares section.

If people are just looking for places to find links to YT vids or something, they can just search YT.

TPB is the worlds largest library, and custom designed for allowing people to hear the content you like.  This forum is more limited in scope.  It's mainly meant to be a help and discussion forum.

The threads in the music section are very popular according to the number of views, so visitors to the forum obviously appreciate that section.

There are some smooth jazz songs that would be a good complement to the soundscape music that I post in the Serenity thread. I'll just post some selections in that thread. That is a better solution I think than posting them in the jazz thread.

Have a good day.

My promote your shares thread has 317,299 views. I'm not trying to argue with you mate. I'm trying to explain how things work around here.

I have changed my mind about strictly posting smooth jazz in the Serenity thread.

Some of that music would be compatible with that thread, but not all. I would have to leave out a certain portion of the music.

I will post it in the Jazz thread.

I can differentiate the smooth jazz from the other jazz with a title before every post, such as:

Smooth Jazz:

If any of the jazz “purists” want to give me grief over it, I will let you know.

Thanks.

Resurgence - I've changed my mind. You can have your Smooth Jazz thread.

I've just had a dog walking friend of mine chew my ears off for an hour and an half, explaining the different styles of jazz, while playing examples from the jazz library on his mobile phone. I feel like part of me has died listening to that much jazz but I now see your point. I'm sorry I didn't understand before, and if you want to create threads on other styles of jazz too, you're welcome to.

Have fun.

Jesus, spud. You are like the best person that ever existed. Hats off to you for that kind of honesty, thoughtfulness, and accountability.

On topic: I like smooth jazz and I cannot lie Smile
