COVERS - WARNING - A LOT OF COVERS...

1970 - End of an Era

1970 can be marked by three significant events.

First was the departure of Jack Kirby from Marvel, after a decade of amazing creativity with Stan Lee. Fans debate the date the Silver Age of Comics ended, the departure of Kirby from Marvel is a candidate.

Next, 1970 saw the cancellation of X-Men, despite quality talent on the book in Roy Thomas and Neal Adams. The book would return as a reprint title but it would be in the mid-70s before new stories would be seen again.

Finally, 1970 saw the creation of one of Marvel's most successful comics - Conan the Barbarian. Not an original Marvel character, the character and many of the stories were licensed from the estate of Robert E Howard, the creator of Conan, but the series would be memorable for the art of Barry Smith and the writing of Roy Thomas, who made the character a true comic book hero.

Xavier Returns

In issue 042 fans saw Charles Zavier die, and shortly after the X-Men split up and in each issue one character would be featured in a solo story. When the team get back together in issue 065 they return to the mansion to discover the Professor is still alive!

It is revealed that the 'Xavier' who died was in fact the Changling, and the real Xavier has ben working to combat the threat of the Z'Nox, an alien race intent on conquering the Earth.

X-Men Are Cancelled

The return of Xavier and the stunning art of Neal Adams were not enough to stop the sales of X-Men declining and with issue 066 the title was cancelled.

Issue 067 was published at a later date and the series continued but all the stories were reprints.

It would not be until Giant-Size X-Men 001 in 1975 that the world would see a new X-Men title, with the arrival of the all-new team coming to the rescue of the old team.

Following the one new story in the Giant-Size issue, the regular title saw a return to new stories with issue 094, after which the series, and the X-Men universe would see unprecedented growth over the years.

Fantastic Four Hit 100

July 1970 sees the centenary issue of Fantastic Four, the first title in the new Marvel Age to hit 100, written by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby.

The story features the Mad Thinker and Puppet Master using android doubles of the team's enemies to attack them.

The issue is also a celebration of one hundred consecutive issues by Lee and Kirby.

Split Titles Return

1970 sees the return of titles featuring two stories, with Amazing Adventures and Astonishing Tales.

Amazing Adventures featured the Inhumans, with art by Kirby, and the Black Widow, by Gary Friedrich and John Buscema.

Astonishing Tales saw the pairing of Ka-Zar, with the first story by Lee and Kirby, and Dr Doom, by Roy Thomas and Wally Wood.

The Dawning of the Hyborian Age

Robert E Howard created Conan in the thirties and his stories appeared in the pulp magazine Weird Tales.

Roy Thomas and Barry Smith were the creators of the comic book version in 1970, the team lasting on the title for 24 issues.

Following Smith's departure, Joh Buscema would become the regular artist on the title and would also contribute the majority of the art in the black and white magazine, Savage Sword of Conan.

The series is set around 10,000 years in the past, and references the ancient civilisations Atlantis and Valusia.

The popularity of the series would see other sword and sorcery characters such as Kull and Red Sonja in their own titles, as well as several other Howard creations, such as Bran Mak Morn.

The Death of George Stacy

Whilst Spider-Man was fighting Dr Octopus, George Stacy would attempt to save a small child from falling debris.

The child would be saved but George Stacy was crushed by the masonry.

Stacy calls Spider-Man 'Peter' revealing that he knew Parker's secret identity. As he dies, Stacy urges Peter to look after Gwen, but when she later blames Spider-Man he knows he can never tell her the truth of his secret identity.

Also Making Their Debut

Agatha Harkness, a sorceress, is chosen by Reed Richards to be governess for Franklin Richards (Fantastic Four 094)

Sunfire, a mutant from Hiroshima, attacks the Capitol building coming up against the X-Men, who he will briefly join later. (X-Men 064)

Orka, the Human Killer Whale, debuts in Sub-Mariner 032

Arkon, of the planet Polemachus comes up against the Avengers in issue 075.

Red Wolf, Marvel's first Native American hero, appears for the first time in Avengers 080.

Jim Wilson, created by Roy Thomas and Herb Trimpe, debuts in Incredible Hulk 131.

Llyra will meet the Sub-Mariner for the first time in issue 032.

Other Notable Events

Eddie March is trained by Tony Stark to replace him as Iron Man when Stark fears constant fighting in the armour would affect his heart. (Iron Man 021)

Nick Fury, believed dead, reappears using the alias of Scorpio. (Avengers 072)

Bruce Banner's wedding to Betty Ross is halted when the Leader hits Banner with a blast of radiation that turns him into the uncontrollable Hulk (Incredible Hulk 124)

Captain Marvel's title returns for just two issues in 1970, not to return again until 1972.

Jack Kirby's final full issues are Fantastic Four 101 and Thor 179. A last story by Lee and Kirby will appear in an edited version in Fantastic Four 108.

COVERS - WARNING - A LOT OF COVERS...

1971 - The Birth of the Big Event Story

Marvel celebrated a decade of the Marvel Universe in November 1971, ten years after the debut of Fantastic Four 001, and two events epitomised the future of Marvel, and comics.

Roy Thomas created the first 'event' at Marvel when he pitted the two major alien races, the Kree and the Skrulls, against each other in a nine-issue epic. This would set the standard by which all future multi-part events would be measured.

At the same time, Marvel changed the way comics would be produced by challenging the way the content of the comics was controlled by the Comics Code Authority.

The drugs story in Amazing Spider-Man meant certain changes in the Code would be seen and in future all comics had a greater freedom creatively.

Savage Tales, which made it's debut in 1971, was another way Marvel found new ways to avoid the code, publishing comics in a magazine format aimed at an older audience.

That first issue featured Conan, a new but very popular character, and the debut of the Man-Thing.

The Kree-Skrull War

Running through nine issues of the Avengers (089-097), the Kree-Skrull War was the first multi-part story that featured not just the Avengers but also Captain Marvel and the Inhumans.

The story was created by Roy Thomas and was the first 'event' storyline that would be followed later by Secret Wars and in the more recent years by Civil War, World War Hulk and Dark Reign, amongst many others.

The Defenders

The Defenders featured an unusual grouping of Dr Strange, the Hulk and Namor who had previously joined forces in 1970 (Strange, Namor and Hulk) to combat the Nameless Ones, and then in Sub-Mariner 034 and 035 (1971) the combination of the Hulk, Sub-Mariner and Silver Surfer formed the Titans Three.

The Defenders are introduced in the first issue of Marvel Feature (Dec '71) and in 1972 the first issue of the Defenders would appear in August.

Marvel Takes on the Comics Code

The Comics Code was introduced in 1955 as a response to complaints that comic books were corrupting the young of America, and severely restricted many forms of story-telling (even in Westerns where no-one could be killed by being shot, leading to all manner of situations to avoid the bullet causing someone's death).

Stan Lee was approached in '71 by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare to use the stories he was writing to highlight the dangers of drugs popular at the time with the young.

The Comics Code prevented the story being told in an unedited way, so Marvel published the three-part story in Amazing Spider-Man 096-098 without the Comics Code seal on the covers.

With the acclaim the story received the Comics Code Authority made changes to the Code relaxing the restrictions on stories featuring drugs, and also vampires, ghouls and werewolves.

This would pave the way for many new horror stories in the coming years and also more freedom for comics writers.

Spider-Man Joins the 100 Club

The previous year saw the FF reach the 100 mark, in 1971 it was Spider-Man's turn to celebrate the landmark achievement.

The story would see Spider-Man realise, in a moment of doubt, that he had to continue to fight crime.

Unfortunately Peter Parker had already taken a serum to remove his spider-powers, the result saw Parker grow four extra arms!

Enter Harlan Ellison

Harlan Ellison, an acclaimed science fiction writer and screenwriter for both movies and TV, saw his first Marvel story published in 1971.

A two-part story in Avengers 088 and Incredible Hulk 140, the story was scripted by Roy Thomas with art by Sal Buscema.

The Death of Dorma

Sub-Mariner 036 saw Namor marry Dorma, his long-time love, but then the bride was revealed to be none other than Llyra, Namor's enemy.

Llyra had kidnapped Dorma so she could take her place. Angry that Dorma would still be Namor's wife and not Llyra herself, she killed Dorma in revenge.

Meet Morbius the Vampire

Michael Morbius tried to cure himself of a blood disease, but only succeeded in creating a vampire-like creature dependant on human blood.

This way of creating a vampire was due to the Comics Code which was yet to loosen the restrictions on vampires in comic books.

A New Red Wolf

Writer Gardner Fox and artist Syd Shores created a story featuring Red Wolf set in the nineteenth century in Marvel Spotlight 001.

Previously, in 1970, the modern-day Red Wolf had appeared in Avengers 080.

Doc Samson

Doc Samson appeared in Incredible Hulk 141, treating his patient Bruce Banner, who had been cured of turning into the Hulk.

When Samson is exposed to Gamma rays he becomes super-powered and develops long green hair.

Bruce Banner also irradiates himself with Gamma rays when he sees Samson flirting with Betty Ross.

Although the powers he gained would be lost in this story, Samson later re-acquired them and became a friend to Banner and regular support in the Hulk shorelines.

The popularity of the series would see other sword and sorcery characters such as Kull and Red Sonja in their own titles, as well as several other Howard creations, such as Bran Mak Morn.

Also Making Their Debut

Namora, Namor's cousin, appears for the first time since the Golden Age in Sub-Mariner 033.

Squadron Supreme, living on a parallel Earth, appear in Avengers 085.

Jarella first meets Bruce Banner in Incredible Hulk 140

Other Notable Events

The Falcon becomes Captain America's partner beginning with Captain America and the Falcon 134, which would remain the cover title of the comic until it reverted back to Captain America after issue 122.

Another co-star is the Black Widow, who joins Daredevil with issue 081.

Thor 193 sees the final story by Stan Lee on the title.

COVERS - WARNING - A LOT OF COVERS...

1972 Dracula, Werewolf, Ghost Rider and Man-Thing - The Year of Horror

1971 had seen Marvel challenge the Comics Code and the reception that the drugs story received, coupled with the popularity and respect Marvel's comics were receiving, saw a significant change in the Code.

The result was a release of horror titles not seen since the fifties, with Dracula, the Werewolf, Ghost Rider and Man-Thing all getting their own titles. In addition the X-Men's Beast also saw a change as he lost the human look he'd had since birth and now turned into a far more beastly and hairy form.

In the editorial offices, Stan Lee became publisher of all Martin Goodman's magazines and comics. This gave the editor-in-chief role to Roy Thomas, Marvel's innovative and talented writer.

Roy Thomas would introduce a wide range of new titles embracing not just the Superhero genre but also many other genres, as well as bring in many talented names to bolster the Bullpen's burgeoning list of titles.

Dracula Lives!

Dracula was created by Bram Stoker in the 19th century and the character has been featured in numerous movies.

The first issue of Marvel's comic book version saw an idea by Stan Lee and a plot by Roy Thomas. It was scripted by Gerry Conway with art by Gene Colan.

Issue 007 sees the team of Marv Wolfman, Gene Colan and Tom Palmer begin their long collaboration on the title.

Werewolf by Night

Roy Thomas had an idea for a story narrated in the first-person called 'I Werewolf'.

The name was changed to Werewolf by Night and saw Jack Russell inherit the family curse on his eighteenth birthday, turning into a Werewolf with no control over his actions.

The first issue was created by Gerry Conway and Mike Ploog, later the series regulars would be Doug Moench and Don Perlin.

Ghost Rider

Johnny Blaze tries to save his friend Crash Simpson, who is dying from a deadly disease, by making a deal with the devil.

He actually does the deal with the demon Mephisto, who takes Blaze's soul in exchange for Simpson not dying from the disease.

Mephisto then allows Simpson to die in a bike accident, but keeps Blaze to his word and bonds Blaze with the demon Zarathos.

With the name Ghost Rider, Johnny Blaze assumes the image of a burning skeleton and rides a bike of blazing fire.

An earlier character called Ghost Rider, who lived in the nineteenth century, was renamed Phantom Rider after the success of the modern-day Ghost Rider.

The Power of Warlock

Marvel Premiere 001 sees a story featuring the character 'Him', created by Lee and Kirby five years earlier.

Created by Roy Thomas and Gil Kane, this story would see 'Him' renamed Warlock, and the character sent by the High Evolutionary to Counter-Earth to rescue the people from the Man-Beast.

In August Warlock gets his own title, also by Thomas and Kane.

Whosoever Knows Fear…

Ted Sallis was turned into the Man-Thing when he fell into a swamp, in actual fact the Nexus of All Realities, and anyone showing fear would burn when touched by the Man-Thing.

The Man-Thing had previously appeared in the first issue of Savage Tales, a black and white magazine aimed at mature readers, and unregulated by the Comics Code.

Now, with the easing of the Comics Code a new monthly colour comic was possible, and in issue 010 of Fear, Man-Thing began a regular series.

By issue 015 Man-Thing occupied the whole comic and after issue 015 received his own series.

The Hero for Hire

When Carl Lucas is imprisoned, for a crime he didn't commit, he enters an experiment which gives him bulletproof skin and super strength.

Renamed Like Cage, he becomes a Hero for Hire.

Cage was created by Archie Goodwin and John Romita.

Here Come the Girls

Issue 050 of Sub-Mariner sees Bill Everett both writing and drawing (and inking) the whole book. He introduces Namorita, Namor's cousin.

The Black Widow becomes Daredevil's partner, and they move to San Francisco, however the move will not last long and they are soon back in New York.

Patsy Walker returns to the Marvel Universe after the cancellation of her long-running title in the sixties, featuring, along with her husband Buzz Baxter, in Amazing Adventures alongside the Beast.

Greer Grant Nelson becomes the Cat and appears in her own series, which lasts for four issues, written by Linda Fite.

Nelson will later assume the alter ego Tigra.

Linda Carter, Student Nurse takes up her new job as Night Nurse, a four issue series, beginning in November.

Shanna the She-Devil makes her debut in December, she will team-up with, and later marry, Ka-Zar.

The Doctor is Back

After his 'retirement', Doctor Strange first forms the Defenders, then in 1972 he again stars in his own title, the first issue written by Stan Lee and with art by Barry Smith.

A New-Look Beast

After the cancellation of X-Men with issue 066, the Beast receives his own series in Amazing Adventures 011.

Hank McCoy tests a serum but the effect turns him into a grey, furry animal instead of his normal human appearance.

Later the fur will turn blue.

Concluding the Kree-Skrull War

The Kree-Skrull war comes to a conclusion in March in Avengers 097.

Completing a nine-issue extravaganza, written by Roy Thomas and with art by Sal Buscema, Neal Adams and John Buscema, with inks by Tom Palmer, the story includes the Kree, Skrulls, Inhumans, Captain Marvel and the Avengers plus a host of Golden Age heroes who are recreated by Rick Jones in his final battle with the Supreme Intelligence.

Also Making Their Debut

Spider-Man and the Human Torch appear in Marvel Team-Up beginning in March, effectively a second Spider-Man title and a precursor to Spectacular Spider-Man which will appear later in the decade.

Doc Savage, a pulp magazine hero from the thirties, appears in his own Marvel comic in October.

Other Notable Events

Wonder Man is revealed to be alive, but comatose, in Avengers 102.

Betty Ross, Bruce Banner's former fiancee, marries Glenn Talbot (Incredible Hulk 158 )
