Torrent piece size
When creating a torrent, what is the recommended piece size to use?
Would you find THIS article accurate? Quote: Torrent Piece Sizes when making torrents I always leave the utorrent setting at default and here's what i get: For a 700MB torrent--> Piece size = 1024KiB For a 1GB torrent--> Piece size = 2048KiB For a 1.36GB torrent--> Piece size = 2048KiB I always encode my movies to hit a filesize between 700MB - 1.36GB Should i leave the default numbers or decrease them? If i decrease the piece size, will it help me finish seeding my torrent faster? Here's what i'm thinking changing them to: For a 700MB - 800MB torrent--> Piece size = 512KiB For a 800MB - 1.36 GB torrent--> Piece size = 1024KiB Encoded by VLiS <-- This is how you get involved. RE: Torrent piece size
i always make my torrents so that they have between 10.000 and 20.000 pieces.
for a 700mb rip that would be a 64kb piece size. ![]() ...started uploading from scratch again... YARRR!!! |

RE: Torrent piece size
Depends if I am seeding the same file to various places. Normally I set the size at 512 or 256.

RE: Torrent piece size
Seems that i'm the only one that left the utorrent setting at default
![]() What you guys think about the new values i'm thinking to use? Quote:For a 700MB - 800MB torrent--> Piece size = 512KiB They seem good or i should further decrease them? Encoded by VLiS <-- This is how you get involved. Share it with everybody.

RE: Torrent piece size
My friend Astera is always in search of perfection.
![]() In theory, it is recommended to do what that article explains --namely slicing up the folder in more pieces than those that result from the "auto-detect" function, because that will increase the number of pieces available in the torrent swarm. Here's what Azureu's wiki suggests. In practice, remember that TPB implemented a while ago a limitation regarding the size of the .torrent file --somewhere over 150 kB they start to be rejected by the system. #Edit# Try experimenting if you want but by any means upload 1st to TPB to ensure your .torrent file is accepted. . RE: Torrent piece size
they're within the typical choices, i'd say.
still, i'd never use a size of 1024kb for anything smaller than 10gb... (3rd January 2010 10:32)asterastrip Wrote: When creating a torrent, what is the recommended piece size to use? There isn't one. You have to upload the same amount of data no matter what (barring reuploads of pieces which fail hash checks--but, unless you have a dodgy connection, the no. of those will be immaterial). When you're initial seeding speeds will ramp up faster when you have smaller piece sizes, because peers won't have to download as much data before they can reupload. But, again, you're only initial seeding for an immaterial portion of the torrents life. When sandvine was being used in the US, smaller pieces slipped under its radar more readily than larger ones. But sandvine isn't being used any more. Historically, it's been recommended you aim for 1000-1500 pieces per torrent but that has always struck me as being a no. pulled out of the air--I've never seen any plausible explanation of why those particular no's are better than any others. Using initial seeding, i have to go up to 1.8-1.9 ratio for a 1.36GB torrent ![]() This is too much for me ![]() I'm wondering if reducing the piece size will help me finish seeding faster. I guess i'll reduce it (since it's safe) and monitor my ratio. If it requires less filesize to seed a torrent i'll use them otherwise i'll switch back to the utorrent default settings. Thanx all

RE: Torrent piece size
^^ initial seeding requires 1.8 - 1.9 ratio? ^^
that's strange... i never use initial seeding and a 1.5 ratio seems to do the trick... how about making your torrents at about 140kb-150kb right near the threshold? just aim for 7000-7500 pieces and you're good to go... ![]() ...started uploading from scratch again... YARRR!!! |

I'm not using many trackers (3 in the past and 4 now) so i don't think it's a tracker issue and i never set the private flag in my torrents. Maybe i should disable initial seeding the next time i upload and give it a try. I will definitely reduce the piece size in half and see if that will help too.
