help with VPN and bittorrent

So I just jumped on the VPN bandwagon but I am still unsure how to get it working correctly. My router recently stopped working so I was wondering if there was even a way to get bittorrent such as utorrent working without one or if I need to use something else such as Limewire. Next, I have tried setting them up to only connect to gotrusted through a firewall so that in case of a dropped connection I am not left vulnerable. However, sygate wants to block them completely. Any advice would be appreciated.

Your choice of bit torrent client does not have anything to do with whether or not you have a router. uTorrent is one of the best bit torrent clients ever created, while Limewire is probably the very worst. Your use of a workstation VPN connection is not dependent on whether or not you have a router.

Not having a router means connecting a workstation (typically a Windows OS machine) directly to the public Internet, from where it can be seen and hacked into. It is always best to place your workstations on a private LAN, hidden from public exposure. If a Windows machine that is connected directly to a public IP address is not fully patched, you run a serious risk of the machine being compromised from the outside.

How would I set up utorrent to work without a router and to work with only with vpn?

Moreover why are you using a VPN? VPN are great IF you have a ball-busting ISP, but otherwise are over-kill and can hamper downloading.

Most people don't need it. That said, the VPN should have a setup guide to help you and as Spy links above Utorrent has a really good help forum.

Next question: Why did your router stop working? As stated by Velvet the router is a great form of protection between you an the world. With it when and if someone look at your connection they run in a great big old dumb router, that when set up correctly acts as a big ass front door. Without it, they are staring right into your machine. I'd get mine up and running or grab a new one, they can be gotten pretty inexpensively.

I did google all of this and decided to post as a last resort. To begin with I have no idea how to set up utorrent now that I dont have a router. If I could get it working first then maybe i could set it up with the vpn.

Agentk: U torrent is a snap to setup, with or without a router.

Without: download and install, check your speeds and adjust your client's limits to about 80% of your internet speeds. This will pop up on install, but if you screwed it up or missed it, you can go back to it OPTIONS>SPEED GUIDE and adjust your connection type accordingly.

With: do the same, but add the step of port forwarding. http://portforward.com/ Find your router, follow the guide.

Start the process, if you run into problems come on back with a Q.

Thanks. I got it working with my regular connection however it still wont work with gotrusted. I am using a vpn because of static from my ip. What do i need to do to get it working?

You don't configure uTorrent (or any applications) to work with a VPN. That's the reason you can't find any guides on how to do it.

You simply set up the VPN connection and, once it is connected, your operating system routes all network traffic through it. Your applications never even know you're using one.

[That's why, once you've put one in place, you need to make a few tweaks to stop your applications from carrying on when the VPN goes down. Because normally they just keep sending and receiving traffic totally unaware that your operating system has fallen back to the unsecured network instead of the VPN.]

Now, what do you mean by "won't work"? [You get tracker error messages, you get peers but can't connect,...what?]

what i mean by dont work is that utorrent has the yellow sign on the bottom and when i check the port it says that it is not working correctly and to be sure it is open. however i have no idea how to do that
