PeerBlock more stable than Peerguardian
Has anyone tried PeerBlock. It works much better the Peerguardian
and also works with Blocklist Manager. You can even have it import you current Peerguradian lists and settings. http://www.peerblock.com/ Over 100,000 downloads served! By Mark Bulas on 05-Nov-09 09:30. Comments (0) Tags: None Wow!! As of this morning, we've reached over 100,000 downloads of PeerBlock 1.0! Only slightly more than one month after releasing it, our stable "Public Release" of PeerBlock 1.0 has currently been downloaded 101,394 times. And that's not counting the 10,000+ downloads -- What is PeerBlock's relationship with the old PeerGuardian program? PeerBlock is actually based on the same code used to create PeerGuardian - specifically, the "PG2 RC1 Test3" Vista beta version. That code had a LOT of bugs in it, and hadn't been updated for about two years. So I started up this PeerBlock project to fix all those things that'd been annoying me for so long. A bunch of other people decided to pitch in and help out, some with development, some with testing, and now we're where we are today. So compared with old PeerGuardian software, PeerBlock is much more stable, doesn't require nearly so many hacks/workarounds to get working on Vista/Win7, and is actually under active development . . . so we can (and will!) actually respond to new bug reports or feature requests. ------------ |

RE: PeerBlock more stable than Peerguardian
Argh, still trying to make up my mind about the pro/con arguments for IP blockers...(!)
I read every thread I come across on this topic - the "false sense of security" arguments, the "waste of resources" comments, the "can't catch them all" arguments and all the rest - but despite the passion and reasonable points on the "con" side, I'm still having difficulty giving Peerblock (moved to this from PG2, much more stable) up. Yes, it has caused many annoyances, e.g., when I want to visit a page but can't, when updates for certain programs won't download, etc., but here's the thing: whenever I bring up that little log window and I review what has been blocked, I agree with most of what I see! I *don't* want to be in communication with most of those organizations, and this is a convenient tool that takes care of that for me (and updates its lists, etc.). It's just...this ambivalence is annoying, and I wish I could come down decisively one way or the other. Know what I mean? If anyone has more thoughts, information or suggestions that might help me accomplish that, I'd love to read them. Thanks, BG |
