DVD-R is just a common format compatiable with most boot media. I have had problems with DVD rewritable before and bootable devices, I can't tell you why. Dual layer DVD's work as well, but are more expensive. If the image is under 700mb, you can use a blank CD too. It doesn't really matter, the bootable part is in the image itself.
