If you are a human then you must copy or die. There is no alternative.

Some people use it as fertilizer for crops and such. Many zoos will sell the dung of their predatory animals for people to put on their gardens. In addition to acting as a fertilizer this "zoo doo" will also keep away some animals, like deer.

Piracy; why justify it?

Can someone give a good reason not to let others read the data on my hard drive so they can write the same pattern of 1's and 0's on their own hard drive? Is it a bad thing that bittorrent is speculated to make up to 55% of all internet traffic?

We don't need to talk like we're on the defense end of a stupid accusation anymore.
As long as file-sharing is beneficial in the following areas, I will see people who don't support & use file-sharing as dead weights on the human condition:

Economy
Businesses/Organizations
Environment
Education
Free speech
Cultural exchange & preservation
Art & Creative works
Entertainment
Technological development & access to tools

so send me a copy or post a file of the 1's and 0's that show what you're bank details are?
all your passwords
telephone numbers, landlines and mobile. (we've all put em in our putes from time to time).
way to much personal shit to be made public.

but yeah, i'm taking what you mean out of context i think.
if we had that kind of attitude....a free sharing system of knowledge and entertainment, it would make for a better world.

cd.s would still be sold, gig's visited. hard copy books read, and movie theaters frequented. all this stuff would still be paid for if we shared in the way you describe (freely). as a race we like to hoard and feel the substance of a thing. just downed the new pratchett book (academicals) and i know i'll buy the hard copy. i love the feel of a book page, the same as someone may love the atmosphere of a football match or concert. those are the things we can't share on or through the net, and that's the reason why the moguls will still make money. they get there customers from those who share and freely advertise what's out there in the market place.

just a long winded way of saying i agree with you.

The first 6 or so you may be right.

But if a man develops the cure for cancer on his computer and has gigs and gigs of indecent child photos and videos it still doesn't justify it...he's still going to be locked up and put on the sex offender's register.

May benefit people IE the entire human race, but he still breaks the law.

You may think ''it's only copying a string of 0's and 1's so what?''

Taking the Harry Potter books and plagiarising them 100% and trying to publish them? It's only copying squiggles of ink. And a punishable offense.

So, do you feel that file-sharing is something that needs to occur in our increasingly digitized age? Is it something "natural" to do in this setting? How do you view piracy as being beneficial to the economy? How is it useful for cultural exchange and preservation?

Anyone else care to weigh in one what he said?

"Laws are like sausages, you're better off not seeing them being made" - Otto von Bismark
