Encyclopedia of Population

Author: Various
Title: Encyclopedia of Population (Hardcover ed.)
Release Name: Encyclopedia of Population - (Malestrom)
Publisher: MacMillan Reference Books; 2 Sub edition (May 2003)
Language: English
Unabridged: Yes. 850 pages.
Format: .pdf
Size: 13.3 MG
Covers: Yes.

Description taken from Booklist:

Population means more than people, births, and deaths. Population studies measure how people live, the environment they live in, and the resources to support life. The 336 articles in the Encyclopedia of Population discuss topics as varied as Divorce, Immigration, Land use, and Prehistoric populations. A topical outline provides a thematic view of the encyclopedia's content, which ranges from population theory to the cultural and political aspects of population.

Each entry is 500 to 1,000 words in length, contains a bibliography, and is signed by one of 278 authors--all published scholars from around the world. Among the longer entries are Climate change and population; Diseases, infectious; and Sexuality in humans. As is expected within the field of population, many charts, tables, and graphs accompany the text, including several in an appendix. Biographical entries on 60 individuals whose work was important in the development of population studies--for example, Thomas Malthus, Karl Marx, and Margaret Sanger--are included. Finding aids include an alphabetical list of articles, see and see also references, and an extensive index.

The Encyclopedia of Population is a successor to the International Encyclopedia of Population (Free Press, 1982). This earlier work focused on entries by country, whereas the later title focuses on themes and topics in population. Although the number of entry headings has doubled, the page numbers haven't, so expect concision and some dropped content. Appropriate for academic libraries, particularly those with programs in population studies, world economics, political science, and world development.

Science Fact and Science Fiction: An Encyclopedia

Author: Various; Brian Stableford (Ed.)
Title: Science Fact and Science Fiction: An Encyclopedia
Release Name: Science Fact and Science Fiction - An Encyclopedia (Malestrom)
Publisher: Routledge; 1 edition (September 6, 2006)
Language: English
Unabridged: Yes. 760 pages.
Format: .pdf
Size: 4.37 MG
Covers: Yes

Description:

Science fiction is a literary genre based on scientific speculation. Works of science fiction use the ideas and the vocabulary of all sciences to create valid narratives that explore the future effects of science on events and human beings. Science Fact and Science Fiction examines in one volume how science has propelled science-fiction and, to a lesser extent, how science fiction has influenced the sciences. Although coverage will discuss the science behind the fiction from the Classical Age to the present, focus is naturally on the 19th century to the present, when the Industrial Revolution and spectacular progress in science and technology triggered an influx of science-fiction works speculating on the future. As scientific developments alter expectations for the future, the literature absorbs, uses, and adapts such contextual visions. The goal of the Encyclopedia is not to present a catalog of sciences and their application in literary fiction, but rather to study the ongoing flow and counterflow of influences, including how fictional representations of science affect how we view its practice and disciplines. Although the main focus is on literature, other forms of science fiction, including film and video games, are explored and, because science is an international matter, works from non-English speaking countries are discussed as needed.

Warning! This book contains dangerous ideas! Please use all proper caution and safety equipment while reading. We cannot be held responsible for damage to your mind, or the contents thereof. This book is about the past, present and future evolution of human ideas. Its primary emphasis is on parasitic collectivist ideologies. It examines where they come from, how they harm us and how we can remove them from our own minds and from the culture around us. Finally, it tells us the amazing things that will become possible for humanity when they are gone. Not only religions, but also nation states, racial groups, corporations and other collectives are targeted for clear minded observation and criticism.
